Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and the United States of America all agreed on the importance of protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems while properly managing the fisheries activities based on the best scientific evidence available. In this context, Japan hosted an informal meeting to discuss management of high seas bottom fisheries in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean (NWPO) from 11 to 13 April 2006 in Tokyo. The Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation which conduct bottom trawling fisheries in this area attended to this informal meeting. The participants to the meeting agreed to continue the dialogue to fulfill the requirements of the UNGA resolutions, in particular paragraphs 66 to 71 of the 2004 UNGA resolution 59/25, and paragraphs 69 to 74 of the 2005 UNGA resolution 60/31.
